The Old Hospital Mount Pleasant
A purpose built Workhouse dating back to 1863, the majority of the buildings have been retained and converted to housing, while demolition of a number of later additions have allowed space for new build in keeping with the original style. Declared a Conservation Area in 1993, the ground finish, leaded domes, cast iron railings, canopy and gateway with egg finials, and all aspects of the pedestrian entrance and cobbled walkway have been preserved, as have the perimeter and retaining walls. The Old Hospital represents urban renewal at its best, turning the former workhouse and hospital into 128 attractive and sought after homes for City Living in a superb, mature parkland setting. Sensitive conversion of many of the original buildings has provided smart flats, many with character or unusual features, while new homes have been built in the grounds. Where possible, new housing has been named after the old hospital wards – Penrice, Cheriton, Slade, Overton. Original details:
